This week, Winslow celebrated NAIDOC Week across our sites through cultural traditions and ceremonies.
This year NAIDOC Week marks a major milestone with the theme ‘50 Years of Deadly’, celebrating five decades since NAIDOC became a formal week-long observance. The theme honours the Elders, activists, and communities who have carried the NAIDOC movement forward.
Winslow Group staff at our head office joined local community members in the annual Little Long Walk around the Essendon Fields precinct, in support of the Long Walk Foundation.
The event included a Welcome To Country from Aunty Pam Pederson the daughter of Sir Doug Nicholls who played a fundamental role in the origins of NAIDOC Week, speakers including Mayor of Moonee Valley City Council Cr Rose Iver and CEO The Long Walk Leanne Brooke and a dance and Didgeridoo performance.
It is 22 years since AFL legend and Essendon champion Michael Long walked 650km from Melbourne to Parliament House in Canberra to make a stand for Indigenous communities.
Two decades on, the Long Walk Foundation continues to Walk the Talk, raising money and awareness to support Indigenous education programs across the country.
The annual Little Long Walk around Essendon Fields was to strengthen our relationship to country, walking together in solidarity, and keeping the momentum going in the spirit of NAIDOC Week, and to raise funds for The Long Walk Foundation.
